XR prototypes

Hexagon Visualization has developed several XR prototypes. Some of these are still available for testing and demonstration to internal entities.
This page contains descriptions and information on each of them.

What is XR?

XR is defined as the sum of VR, AR and MR. Wikipedia has more details.

Gaining access

Contact us directly at post @myvr-software.com with a description of use for further information and access to the actual prototypes and their assets that are linked to on this page.
Please note that if you are not a Hexagon entity you must reach out to your Hexagon supplier or partner for more information.
In addition to these binary demos, Hexagon entities may also gain access to the source code of both the prototypes and the mMap SDK.

Underlying technology

Each of the prototypes are based on the Hexagon Visualization SDK for visualization of content. Device position tracking is performed by either on-platform frameworks such as ARCore or third party libraries such as Vuforia.

Smart refinery

During construction of a refinery the remaining parts of structures and other components are shown in AR.

  • Partial and full buildings shown in AR.
  • Participate in a shared, digital space between iOS and HoloLens devices.
  • Deploy a work package for inspection of the construction process.
  • An animated drone (in AR) hovers the refinery site.

Origin: Hexagon Live 2018 in Las Vegas.
Platform: iOS
HW requirements: iPhone SE or higher, iPad Pro, iPad 5th.generation or higher
Additional requirements: ground print, partial construction site with wall prints.
Physical setup: external setup of Smart refinery is not available at this time.
Instructions: demonstrator guide for Smart refinery is not available at this time.

Smart street

A technology and UI demonstration showing how underground infrastructure can be visualized and interacted with through AR.

  • Define what content layers to watch
  • Participate in a shared, digital space between iOS and HoloLens devices.
  • Animate flow of pipes
  • Perform measurements directly in the AR view
  • Spatially define dig area and see related real-time metrics

Origin: Hexagon Live 2018 in Las Vegas.
Platform: iOS, HoloLens
HW requirements: iPhone SE or higher, iPad Pro, iPad 5th.generation or higher
Additional requirements: ground print (single, large file) or ground print (split into 10ft x 10ft chunks).
Physical setup: the ground print must be sized according to the specifications present in this overview image. Optionally add the street art used at Hexagon Live 2018.
Instructions: download the demonstrator guide for Smart street.

ARKit POC

A technology and UI demonstration showing a distillation unit in AR. The user can seamlessly move between a design review scenario placing the model on a surface such as a floor, or scaling the model up allowing the user to walk through it in AR.

Origin: Internal.
Platform: iOS
HW requirements: iPhone SE or higher, iPad Pro, iPad 5th.generation or higher
Additional requirements: none
Instructions: download the demonstrator guide for the ARKit POC.

ARCore POC

A technology and UI demonstration showing a distillation unit in AR. The user can seamlessly move between a design review scenario placing the model on a surface such as a floor, or scaling the model up allowing the user to walk through it in AR.

Origin: Internal.
Platform: Android
HW requirements: ARCore-enabled Android device
Additional requirements: none
Instructions: download the demonstrator guide for the ARCore POC.

Collaborative XR

By combining multiple AR devices, desktops and iPads this demo demonstrates how powerful the collaboration aspects of XR-enabled applications can be.

Origin: Hexagon Live 2017 in Las Vegas.
Platforms: HoloLens, Daqri, iOS, Windows
HW requirements: HoloLens, Daqri Smart Helmet, iPhone 5S or higher, iPad Air 1 or higher, Windows 7 or more recent.
Additional requirements: The physical constructions, prints and interaction-modules used at Hexagon Live 2017.
Physical setup: external setup of Collaborative XR is not available at this time.
Instructions: demonstrator guide for Collaborative XR is not available at this time.

myAR Anaheim

Separator line

Part of a larger prototype where a Daqri helmet was used to simulate a lockout - tagout procedure.

Highlights pipes on a factory floor in AR.

  • green pipes are ok
  • yellow pipes have associated work packages or information
  • red pipes have a faulty condition and require inspection

Tapping a pipe pops up an info-sheet with live readings of temperature and pressure. The pop-up also allows drilling down into the work package or, in the case of a fault, Skype the responsible manager.

Origin: Hexagon Live 2016 in Anaheim.
Platform: iOS
HW requirements: iPhone 5S or higher, iPad Air 1 or higher
Additional requirements: background picture of factory floor, ideally a Daqri helmet with the associated software and physical pipes similar to those used in the original presentation.
Physical setup: the full external setup of myAR Anaheim is not available at this time, however the subset available on the iOS app can be experienced by using the background picture as print, on a projector or showed on a monitor.
Instructions: download the demonstrator guide for myAR Anaheim.
